This
project consists of building a church in the city of Beira,
Mozambique for the Presbyterian Church of Mozambique. This is a seaport
town with a population of about 600,000. A large
number of Islamic people live in the surrounding area. Portuguese is
the native language of these people in addition to their tribal
language. Beira is the second largest city in Mozambique
with it’s own airport and busiest seaport in the country ![]() The Christian Church has been fairly successful in the southern part of Mozambique. But that is not the case in the central and northern parts of the country. The local churches are in disrepair while dozens of new mosques are springing up in the city. Thus the Presbyterian Church in Mozambique is asking for help to build new churches which they will staff with Mozambican missionary pastors The constructed church will have the floor plan shown. The sanctuary is about 1550 square feet and will seat about 200 people. The building will consist of a concrete foundation with brick walls, wood trusses for the sheet metal roof, and a concrete floor. The construction will be performed in conjunction with lots of help from the local people. In fact they are alreadTed Pollock’s family (family of the Christ’s Globe-Trotter) will be leading the building activities and coordinating all work with the Mozambican Presbyterians.y preparing some of the foundation and are acquiring some of the needed bricks. The completed church will look similar to the one shown which volunteers built at Ribuae, Mozambique.in the summer of 2006.At least ten of the Pollock family will be involved in the work. The plan is to have three groups working on the project. The first and third groups will spend two weeks on site and the second group one week. The plan is to have the first group arrive July 19th with the church dedication planned for August 24th. Pollock’s group will make arrangements for air travel to the site. The cost of round trip travel will be around $2,500. Each volunteer is responsible for paying for their travel to Beira. Housing and meals will be provided at the construction site. Please note that we are going to help the people of Mozambique build their church. We are not building it for them. They will work with us and provide many of the materials which they can obtain locally. We will buy materials like cement, doors, windows, and roofing. We need to raise about $40,000 for these expenses. Lots of help is needed. People experienced in masonry and carpentry will be great but that is not necessary. What is necessary is a desire to participate in a short term mission where you get to learn about a country in a way that is only possible by working side-by-side with the local people to help them accomplish a goal even when you don’t speak their language.
