| Evangelical and Medical Mission Work In Uganda In September A SERVE team is planned to go visit Gulu in Northern Uganda to work with Jerry and Candis Bingham (Action International Missionaries) to assist them in their ministry to the people of that area. Conditions are very harsh in that area where great needs exist especially with the children and young adults who have suffered tremendous persecution. Jerry has been focusing on pastoral training and leadership development. The focus for Candis is children's ministry where she works with church leaders who are developing ministry programs for the children. In the 2'A years they have been there, they have branched out to minister in several related areas all working with local churches whenever possible including: • Two trauma centers in Gulu working with children but also child-mothers who have recently escaped from captivity in the bush. • Programs for children who come to Gulu each night to sleep in safety. • An orphanage they have developed for 20 children • A weekly Bible Study for women at a local women's prison. • A weekly Bible Study at a vocational school for young men. • An outreach to women who are HTV positive. • An outreach for disabled children who live in nearby displaced person camps. • Development of vocational training programs for young adults. ![]() |
As can be seen they are involved in quite
a variety of activities. They can use
help
in a whole variety of ways to improve
and
advance their ministry for the people
of
northern Uganda. We have been invited
to
work with them in any of the many ministries
they have on going. Specifics of the
work
teams tasks will depend upon talents
of the
individuals in the team as to how they
can
best fit into the day to day needs
there.
We are looking for 7-8 team members.
There
will be opportunities for doing general
handyman
projects around the ACTION office as
well
as the new orphanage and village, teaching
English as a second language, community
health,
teaching computer skill, teaching life
principles
or giving vocational skills training.
For
those interested in working directly
with
the children 3-5 day camps will be
arranged.
We also plan to perform three or more
days
of medical mission work so people with
medical
skills are also desired. Cost for the activities involve plane fare of about $1400 round trip from San Francisco plus room and board expenses in Gulu which are estimated to be about $30 dollars per day. There are two hotels in Gulu which provide clean, adequate rooms. There will be opportunities to see the tourist sites in the Kampal Entebbe area after completing the short term mission tasks. It should be noted that because of "rebel" activities in northern Uganda, this is considered a "war zone". The Ugandan army is currently taking means to capture the rebels and settle the ongoing disputes. Sally visited the area in Oct., 2004 and never once felt unsafe. This is a wonderful opportunity to really reach out to actual "widows and orphans" and share the love of Christ in very practical ways. Sally can be contacted at email address sksca@sbcglobai.net or phone 925-798-1680. ![]() |
