(SERVE)
A SERVE team is going to Gulu in Northern Uganda to work with Jerry and Candis Bingham (Action International
Missionaries) to assist them in their ministry to the people of that area (the Acholi Tribe). These people have been severely terrorized for many years by the Lord's Resistance Army.

Focus of this trip will be working with the disabled and their teachers, parents, and caregivers. Discussions with leaders of schools for the Hearing Impaired and Visually Impaired have defined a need for the training and encouragement that
professionals from American could bring them. Sally Smith, the team leader, is shown in the photo talking to head of one of the schools. Sally has extensive experience in this type of activity. The schools are working very hard to educate and train their students but they are in great need of help to improve their abilities. We will also have the opportunity of working with disabled students in the local public school.

People having expertise in the following areas are badly needed: Audiologists (none of these children have hearing aids and probably have never been tested - the photo shows a class room full of hearing impaired students), speech and language specialists, vision specialists (they have three Braille machines and no computers - some of the vision impaired students are shown in the photo),
physical or occupational therapists, special education teachers and therapists, and others who have experience and expertise working with various disabilities. A few others are welcome who do not have expertise in the above area but have experience with crafts, music, or vocational teaching skills. Let Sally know what you would like to do and she will see how it fits into this mission trip.

Exact dates of the short term mission trip have not been defined yet. It is planned to be of a four week duration. This gives time to make a significant difference in the training provided. Sally plans to be there for the four week duration. If you can participate but not for that length of time, please work out the details of your availability with her so your expertise
can be used to the maximum extent possible.

Cost will involve air fare which is about $1400 round trip
from San Francisco plus room and board expenses in Gulu
which are estimated to be about $40 per day. There will be opportunities to see tourist sites in the Kampala/Entebbe area after completing the short term mission trip.

Sally Smith can be contacted by phone at 925-798-1680 or by e-mail at sksca(S)sbcglobal.net. Please don't hesitate to contact her.
