Edward Pollock

Ed Pollock grew up in the South Sudan, the son of Ted and Dolly Pollock, Presbyterian missionaries in Africa. He is recently retired from the U.S. Department of Energy where he was the Director of the Department’s Building Energy Efficiency Research program. Under Ed’s leadership the program focused on research that improved building efficiency to the point that a building can produce as much energy as it uses, while keeping the cost of the energy efficiency improvements equal to or less than the cost of the energy saved. He expanded DOE’s role in the Energy Star program, a joint DOE/EPA program, to make America’s 110 million existing homes more efficient. To increase the market penetration of energy efficiency strategies in the residential market, Ed was instrumental in developing the Energy Smart Home Scale, a “miles per gallon label” for homes, and the Builders Challenge Program, a deployment and marketing campaign for high performance homes.

Ed served as a short-term missionary with the Presbyterian Church in Ethiopia in 1964 and 1965 where he designed and built clinics, hospitals, schools and residences at five remote locations in southwest Ethiopia.

Ed is a project team leader for SERVE and has a special interest in providing effective training of short-term mission teams for churches and SERVE’s mission agency partners.
