Growing up in the Greater Philadelphia region, Matt holds divinity degrees from Bob Jones University and Fuller Seminary and is a Merril Fellow. He also has extensive coursework at Houghton College, Georgetown University, Dallas Theological Seminary, William Carey International University and Harvard University Divinity School.
Matt has served in several important roles of the Presbyterian church. Notable Roles include:
Executive Director of Presbyterians for Biblical Concerns and Editor of the Presbyterian Communique'
General Director of the Presbyterian Center for Mission Studies. PCMS is engaged in research, resourcing and recruitment in cross-cultural frontier mission to unreached peoples in the world. The organization is assisted in this ministry to the Presbyterian Church by regular interfacing with the U.S. Center for World Mission (USCWM) in Pasadena where Matt serves on the Board of Directors.
Founder and Chairman of the Board for SERVE (Sending Experienced Retired Volunteers Everywhere). It is a volunteer, nonprofit organization mobilizing retired Presbyterians and persons from other denominations in short-term mission worldwide.
International Evangelist serving presently with the Presbyterian Order for World Evangelization (POWE).

Matt currently resides in Philadelphia. He is married to an elementary school teacher and together they have four grown children and seven grandchildren.
