Discipleship Training

SERVE's Discipleship Training Track will provide biblical and practical education to pastors, leaders and others in emerging world settings. SERVE envisions forming a network of local committees interested in contextualizing Christian and Marketplace Education by Extension in their own locale. Teaching opportunities will be open to Bible school and seminary professors, graduate students, church educators, pastors and workplace professionals, to present short courses under the auspices of the city-by city-local committees and SERVE. Each committee can request a customized series of seminars in Bible knowledge, practical Christian theology in the local context, effective intercultural communication, organizational development, self-sustaining (tent-making) ministry, self-sustaining small-business development, stewardship, family counseling, and other topics as needed.

Over the years we have received requests for discipleship and leadership training – a recognized need by many of the workers in various countries where we serve. We have adopted Perspectives on the World Christian Movement, developed at the U.S. Center for World Mission, as a key tool in our discipleship vision. In keeping with our commitment to meeting global needs in context, SERVE's discipleship/marketplace training ministry can take a number of different forms. Some of the possibilities are:

  • A course of basic Christian concepts presented after a preaching mission, to jumpstart believers on their discipleship journey.
  • "Schools of the Prophets" or theological encampments modeled after the companies of prophets instituted by Samuel, Elijah, and other Old Testament Prophets. We anticipate that the Schools of the Prophets would be conducted by indigenous pastors and theologians after a SERVE staff member has initiated the process. Time frame for an encampment could be from several weeks to several months in duration, and include small-business skill development.
  • An intensive course on leadership training could be provided to pastors and church members, varying from three days to three weeks.
  • The Perspectives on the World Christian Movement, developed at the U. S. Center for World Mission, could be presented as a weekend mini-course, or up to a full day per week for thirteen weeks.

These courses are intended to be of benefit to tomorrow's leaders in many different denominations abroad.

Board Member Rev. Matthew Welde, (Minister-At-Large, US Center for World Mission) is the visionary and organizing pastor for SERVE's Discipleship/Marketplace Training Track. Matt has laid the foundations for such programs in Kenya and Peru, under the auspices of local denominational leaders.

We are seeking participants to help launch this new endeavor. Pastors, leaders, counselors, business development teachers, theological students in search of field education experience, technical assistants, willing helpers for hospitality ministry, intercessors and others all are needed. If you desire to assist with any of these strategic ministries, please tell us a bit about yourself.
